It’s easy to see leaving the room as an act of defiance or disrespect.
But as with all behaviour, it's likely communicating something very different.
For a young person carrying adversity, sitting still in a busy classroom may feel overwhelming. Their nervous system likely flooded by stress hormones, tipping them into survival mode; to flight or fight.
What can look like a “won’t” is often a “can’t” as their nervous system halts any capacity to learn in that moment.
Walking out isn’t about avoiding learning; it’s about seeking safety. So as emotionally available adults, it's about instilling those feelings of felt safety in the everyday.
Wondering what safety may look like to that young person.. and if they still need to leave, is there a way to communicate with curiosity instead of punishment?
