Parental Imprisonment: Schools, Prisons and Families Working Together to Reduce Trauma

When a parent is arrested, remanded into custody and sentenced, it can be a very traumatic and confusing time for children. Feelings of abandonment, shame, guilt and confusion can be exacerbated by community and media responses and conflicting voices around them. These children will have a host of questions that can and should be age-appropriately dealt with by way of trauma informed practices.

Course Overview

Schools and prisons are worlds apart and for many of the 320,000 children each year in the UK who experience a parent in prison, bringing these worlds together can make a huge difference in reducing the potential long-term harm. It normalises their experiences and enhances teaching staff’s understanding of their situation. This will in turn increase their chances of reaching their full potential and ensuring they have adequate support at school when and if they need it.

This 2-hour session provides an awareness of how we can all work together
We’ll explore:

  • The alarming statistics of these ‘invisible’ children
  • ‘Bobby’s Story’ - a candid film involving a child, his parents and his school
  • How PRRR is embedded within the IW service
  • Gate-keeping and information sharing
  • 'Bobby’s update - how TISC and School Zone work hand in hand

This training is ideal for school staff and any other statutory and non-statutory organisations working with the children of prisoners. Let us open your eyes to the elephant in the room.

Parental Imprisonment: Schools, Prisons and Families Working Together to Reduce Trauma

Created by Julie Jones

Julie Jones

With a background in supporting children who experience domestic abuse, Julie has always championed the significance of the role of schools where children do not have a stable home life.

In 2012, this led her to work with children whose parents are involved in the Criminal Justice System and she has now successfully developed a ‘School Zone’ service across 4 Welsh Prisons and is currently setting up the service at 4 English establishments.

She has developed a significant network of schools, providing training on the impact of parental imprisonment and helping build relationships between schools, families and prisons. Schools attend the prisons and share the children’s schoolwork with the prisoner, his child and family, reducing barriers and promoting education within a trauma informed environment.

This work was recognised in 2022, with her receiving a prestigious Butler Trust award from The Princess Royal, for her services to the children of prisoners.
