Supporting the Strugglers:  stories behind the empty desk.

There are myriad reasons why some children and teenagers face significant internal struggles to cross the threshold into school. In recent years, Emotionally Based School Avoidance is the umbrella term used by most schools and professionals in support services. In this session, we’ll set aside that descriptor. Instead, we’ll bring some of the key issues to life by focusing on the stories of three young people. The session will provide insight into their experiences and will provide practical, trauma-informed strategies that will be supportive of the child and their family on their journey back to learning.

Course Overview

This interactive 2-hour session aims to be a catalyst for participants to reflect on the whole child rather than just their presenting behaviour. The session will equip school staff and professionals working in this field with practical steps that can help children gradually reduce fear, rebuild confidence and begin to feel safe enough to return to learning. Brought to life by case studies, we’ll explore:

  • What do we mean by safety?
  • The neurochemistry of the struggle
  • Why we can’t ‘reason’ a child out of their fear and anxiety.
  • Why our use of language is so important
  • Some ways back in
  • What support the family may need: the parent/carer; the sibling(s)
