Course Overview

When tragedy strikes a school community, through sudden loss, critical incidents, or wider traumatic events, the impact is deeply felt across pupils, staff, and families. Schools play a central role in holding, containing, and responding to this grief.

This 2-hour session offers a compassionate and practical trauma-informed framework, grounded in relational practice and neuroscience.

You’ll explore:

  • What children and young people need most in the aftermath of a tragedy
  • How to support staff to feel safe, regulated, and able to respond
  • Do’s and don’ts in communication with pupils and families
  • The importance of ritual, remembrance, and routine in the healing process
  • Practical strategies for creating a “holding environment” across the school

This is a reflective and strengthening session, designed to build confidence and shared responsibility among school staff when navigating painful events. Aimed at leaders, teachers, and pastoral teams, it offers both emotional grounding and concrete tools for compassionate crisis response.
